Stewards of Our Talent
We are used to thinking of talent as playing a musical instrument or doing
something artistic. Talents however can also be a wide range of other innate
abilities you may have.
Being a patient listener, a good cook, a cooperative team member, a fastidious
cleaner, are all special gifts. As good stewards and disciples of Christ, it is
our responsibility to discern the strengths with which God has blessed us.

The questions we must ask are: What are the gifts God has given me that I have
never even thought to thank him for?
What are the areas in this community which could use my help? Am I only
employing my talents where there is a financial return?
Lay people have a very important role to play in the mission of salvation. By
Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist, we are commissioned by Christ himself
to this mission.
In Lumen Gentium from Vatican II, we are told that “every layman, in virtue of
the very gifts bestowed upon him, is at the same time a witness and a living
instrument of the mission of the Church itself.”
In Christ, God became fully man and a part of our world. Our responsibility is
to make the most of the things we do well to serve God and those around us in
need. Through the example of Jesus and his personal call to each of us, we can
be certain that our gifts can be employed joyfully and fruitfully.
The pastoral letter of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops tells us,
“Parishioners must accept responsibility for their parishes and contribute
generously – both money and personal service – to their programs and projects.
For baptized Christians, the call to follow Jesus makes it an obligation, not an
option, to live by the principles of good stewardship.
