Denis
Bédard, the Cathedral’s music director and distinguished organist announces
an exciting series of five concerts featuring Holy Rosary’s magnificent
symphonic organ. This instrument, built in 1900 and restored in 2000 by Casavant
Frères, is one of the most beautiful organs on the West Coast.

Denis Bédard will be joined by saxophonist Julia Nolan in a programme
featuring this beautiful and unusual instrumental combination. The first half of
the concert will feature transcriptions of works from the Baroque period by
Marcello and Telemann, and solo organ works by Sweelinck and Bach. The second
half will be devoted to three of Denis Bédard's works: Rhapsodie for
organ solo, and two sonatas for saxophone and organ.

Advent has inspired composers throughout the ages and these works, though less
well known than much Christmas music, are just as beautiful and well worth
discovering. You are invited to come and enjoy a selection of these works,
performed by the Cathedral’s own musicians: organist Denis Bédard and the
Cathedral Choir, assistant organist Catherine Walsh and the
Holy Rosary Women’s Choir and the Contemporary Choir with director
Chito Lacsina.

organist Rachel Laurin is based in Ottawa and pursues an international
career as a performer and improviser. After her brilliant debut performance at
Holy Rosary Cathedral in August 2000, the Cathedral is happy to welcome her back
in a programme featuring Bach, Vierne, Daveluy, her own compositions, and an
improvisation. This recital has been made possible thanks to the Royal
Canadian College of Organists, co-producer of the event.

of France's leading organists and the first woman to win an improvisation prize
at the Chartres International Organ Competition, Sophie-Véronique
Cauchefer-Choplin maintains a busy concert schedule throughout Europe and in
North America, Asia and Australia. Her performance at Holy Rosary Cathedral will
include works by Bach, Franck, Vierne, Mendelssohn, and the Cathedral's own
Denis Bédard, as well as an improvisation.
This recital has been made possible thanks to the French General Consulate in
Vancouver, co-producer of the event.
