In December of 2002 the Cathedral replaced
some of its carpeted flooring with ceramic tiles from Italy.
Labyrinth
In the middle aisle, near the main
entrance of the Cathedral, a Labyrinth (or Maze) is worked into the
porcelain tiles. Cut by a laser beam saw, the pattern is formed by contrasting
coloured tiles. The pattern is the same as that found in the sixth century
Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. The original is eleven feet in
diameter; ours is three feet wide. A Rose, in honour of Our Lady Queen
of the Rosary, forms the center of our labyrinth. The Labyrinth is a sign
of purification as we enter God’s House. It complements the
Holy Water stoops found nearby at the entrance and is a symbol of the Purgative
Way of the spiritual life, of our need to cleanse ourselves as we come
into the Presence of God. |
